The 2016 Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Aux Chezeaux includes more whole-bunch fruit than the Aux Charmes at 70%. It has a well-defined bouquet of blackberry and sage, later a touch of brine. The aromatics feel quite complex and develop more and more delineation as it opens up. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, just a touch of reduction here but good depth with a little more sweetness and comeliness than the Aux Charmes. This is a well-crafted Morey-Saint-Denis from Virgile.

The 2015 Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Aux Chezeaux comes from white clayey soils with a lot of hard limestone as the bedrock. This includes 80% whole cluster fruit. It has a refined and elegant bouquet with pressed rose petals infusing the scents of small red cherries, pomegranate and dried orange rind scents. This is perhaps more bashful than some of Virgile Lignier's other 2015s. The palate is very fresh and vivacious on the entry with commendable depth and energy. The mineral component comes through strongly here, the finish quite powerful and with superb tension all the way through to the finish. Super-bon (as they say in these parts).

Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2014 tasting, the 2014 Morey St Denis Aux Chezeaux 1er Cru comes across as rather stemmy on the nose, the whole bunches not quite as well integrated as others at first but assimilating with aeration. The palate is more cohesive with fine tannin, lovely pure red fruit and a gentle but insistent finish that is a joy. Like Domaine Lignier-Michelot's other 2014s, this seemed to improve in the glass, the components soon knitting together. Tasted September 2017.
