The 2015 Chassagne-Montrachet les Chenes undergoes a long pre-fermentation maceration to counter the rusticity and also undergoes a two-week cuvaison. This came from a one-year-old barrel, although the final blend will have 30% new wood. It has ample redcurrant and cranberry scents on the nose and I admire the transparency and energy here. The palate is crisp and chalky on the entry with a keen line of acidity. This is less rustic than other red Chassange-Montrachets that I have tasted, with a pleasant touch of soy on the finish. There is part of me that wishes this would not see any new oak - I quite like it as it is!

The 2014 Chassagne-Montraches les Chênes (Rouge) comes from four parcels within the lieu-dit. It has a clean, pure blackcurrant and raspberry-scented bouquet that is a little conservative and tight-lipped at the moment. The palate is medium-bodied with solid, slightly obdurate tannin, clean lines though, with crunchy blackberry and strawberry, laced with a pinch of black pepper on the finish. Enjoy over the next 4-6 years.
