The 2008 Caldera is a blend of 50% Grenache (68-70 year old bush vines), 25% Shiraz and 25% Mourvedre aged in old wooden 225-liter barrels. It displays fresh blackberry, raspberry and white pepper on the nose that displays fine delineation, and the palate is generous on the entry, with peppery dark berries and a touch of game that leads to a dry, grainy, meaty finish that is very satisfying. Drink now-2016. Based in Paarl, Fairview is one of South Africa’s historic names, synonymous with the Back family who bought the estate in 1937. They produce a range of well-priced, mainly Rhone inspired wines under the watchful eye of winemaker Anthony de Jager. They also produce the ever-popular entry level La Capra and Goats do Roam range that were tasted for this report, but not all made the grade.Importer: Vineyard Brands, Birmingham, Alabama.
