The 2017 Vignacorta is a blend of 80% Gaglioppo and 20% Magliocco. This well-priced red opens to a darkly saturated color and dense aromas of black fruit and Morello cherry. The wine is fruity and raw with bold intensity and firm textural richness. This is a bold, simple and pretty red wine. Some 20,000 bottles were produced.

The 2015 Vignacorta is a blend of Gaglioppo and Magliocco, two of Calabria’s most important native grapes. This is a youthful red wine that is redolent of primary fruit aromas with cherry and wild raspberry in prime view. There is also an evident note of smoke or spice that still needs to integrate. This is a wine to drink within the next two years, but despite that near-term drinking window, it does need a month or two of extra bottle aging. In the mouth, this simple and one-dimensional wine is sweet and spicy.

The 2013 Vignacorta is a blend of Gaglioppo (80%) and Magliocco (20%) that is aged in oak for ten months. This is a very attractive representation of the main indigenous grapes of Calabria. The nose shows sweet aromas of dried cherry and black currant with balsam herb and licorice at the back. I wouldn't call the wine complex, but it definitely offers a surprising level of nuance and intrigue. The single vineyard is named Vignacorta (or "short vineyard") because the ancient vines are planted in a head-pruned training system and therefore do not grow tall on a modern trellis. The blend ages in oak for nine months.
