The 2016 Ronco dei Quattroventi is a pure expression of oak-aged Gaglioppo. The wine opens to attractive color saturation that is both dark and rich. It delivers sweet perfumes of wild rose, candied orange peel and cherry confit with generous primary intensity. In fact, those cherry notes stand tallest. This is a ripe and ready-to-drink red wine from Southern Italy to pair with spicy Amatriciana sauce. Some 20,000 bottles were made.

The Fattoria San Francesco 2013 Ronco dei Quattroventi is Gaglioppo aged in oak for 18 months. This wine opens to a beautifully saturated and thickly concentrated appearance. The nose is generously endowed with sweet fruit notes of sun-ripened cherries, fresh plum and black currant. Oak-driven tones of sweet tobacco, baking spice and cinnamon also appear in evident doses.

The 2010 Ronco dei Quattroventi is mostly Gaglioppo (with smaller percentages of other grapes) that has been aged in oak for 18 months. This is an immediate and stripped down wine with aromas of wet earth, pressed rose, red currant and dried cranberry. The nose is fresh and easy going and offers moderate complexity. Ronco dei Quattroventi is a celebrated Calabrian wine that sees fruit sourced from hillside vineyards. The wine should be consumed within the next five years.

This Calabrian rose made from the native Gaglioppo grape exhibits fine notes of sweet berry, raspberry and blueberry. Bright in color and density, this is very nice wine from southern Italy that is clean and bright, but not banal.——M.L.(10/1/2008)—— 86
