The 2014 Gran Verán is a selection of the best red grapes, 60% Manto Negro and the rest Syrah, a ripe red fermented in stainless steel and 500-liter barrels and matured in new 225-liter French barriques for 18 months. If 18 months in new small barriques for a Mediterranean red sounds like too much to you, it probably is. There are notes of smoky bacon and pork rind intermixed with sweet spice and ripe black fruit. The palate is full-bodied, generously oaked and with abundant dusty tannins. A big, oaky red for fans of the style, quite good for what it is. 4,000 bottles were filled in November 2016.
