From the original plantings on the winery's home block, the 2018 Le Maitre Pinot Noir comes from the oft-maligned 10/5 clone, planted in 1983. It's rich and earthy, with subdued but deep fruit notes of plums and black cherries—not exactly charming, but impressively suave nonetheless. Medium to full-bodied, with supple tannins and an uncommon level of concentration that has completely soaked up the 25% new French oak, it's my pick of the Gibbston Valley 2018 Pinots, sure to age well for up to a decade.
