This is one of the top-shelf wines from Girlan. The 2018 Alto Adige Pinot Noir Riserva Mazon Vigna Ganger (in a heavy glass bottle) offers ripe cherry and wild berry aromas, medium-weight texture and dark concentration. It also shows a very unexpected 15% alcohol content with a hint of sweetness. It ages in barrique for 18 months (with 70% new oak), and only 1,910 bottles were produced. Fruit comes from a 1.4-hectare site with calcareous clay soils.

Showing up in a heavy bottle, this is the big boy from Girlan, in both form and function. There is more maturity to the 2017 Alto Adige Pinot Noir Riserva Mazon Vigna Ganger, and I guess this makes sense given the hot vintage, but it also falls flatter too, from an aromatic point of view. The wine bursts through the door with big richness and texture, and in fact, it is mostly played forward in terms of that texture in the mouth. Dark cherry and cassis also appear, but this wine is less nuanced in this vintage compared to cooler ones. I came back 24 hours later and still found a lot of cherry, and even cherry liqueur. This is a production of 2,225 bottles.

The Girlan 2016 Alto Adige Pinot Noir Riserva Mazon Vigna Ganger is a distinguished expression of the grape—and one of the best to come from Italy. This special wine draws its fruit from a vineyard site that is a veritable garden of Pinot Noir, with steep diurnal temperature shifts, a good elevation (at 370 meters above sea level) and loose limestone soils. This vintage and past vintages teach us that Vigna Ganger does not specifically offer those typical wild berry and blue flower aromas you normally get with the Burgundian grape. Instead, this interpretation veers toward dark plum, slate or granite. It shows a synergistic use of oak spice and tar, and it has more structure, thanks to 20% stem inclusion during fermentation. The palate delivers candied cherry, blood orange and pressed lilac. This wine needs more time to evolve in the cellar. Production is a precious 2,700 bottles.

The Mazon vineyard sits about 370 meters above sea level in an unusual microclimate, and this 2015 Alto Adige Pinot Noir Riserva Mazon Vigna Ganger has soaked up every bit of the sunshine to hit that gently sloping southwestern exposure. There is a lot of dark saturation and density here, with a feel of warm-vintage ripeness and volume. This wine offers soft and amazing textural richness for a Pinot Nero, which tends to be more linear and sharply contoured than this expressions is. The Ganger subzone of the Mazon (or Mazzon) vineyards is known for its deep soils with thick clay at the bottom and looser limestone topsoils. This is Pinot Noir clone 777. A mere 2,350 bottles were made.

This is a precious wine with only 1,917 750-milliliter bottles and 120 magnums made. They are all packaged in heavy glass bottles inside wooden boxes. The 2014 Alto Adige Pinot Noir Riserva Mazon Vigna Ganger is a wine of pedigree and grace. The bouquet presents a medley of dark berry aromas that are infused with smoke, tar and black licorice. Keeping in line with the grape (and the cooler vintage), the wine offers mid-weight density and steady persistence. I can definitely say that this vintage is a bit shorter compared to the spectacular 2012 edition. The 2014 vintage also delivers a pretty note of cherry sweetness on the finish. The wine sees partial stem inclusion and is fermented in stainless steel for 20 days. It does malolactic fermentation in barrique and is later aged in oak for 20 months. Fruit is sourced from Mazzon, the area most associated with quality Pinot Nero grapes within the Alto Adige appellation. The Ganger vineyard is located from 360 to 380 meters above sea level with limestone soils at the surface and deep clay deposits below that topsoil.
