A blend of Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2018 The Evil Twin offers notes of roasted meats, smoked barbecue dipped in sweet molasses sauce, notions of plum sauce and black peppercorn and vanilla and baking spice aromas. Full-bodied and high octane, the palate offers flavors of chocolate-covered blueberries, plum pie and sweet tobacco along with firm tannins and sweet fruit flavors. The blend ends with a long, lingering and spicy finish that will continue to please until its 10th birthday.

I find that Syrah-Cabernet blends can be challenging to get right. Still, the 2016 The Evil Twin is a success, with blackberry aromas on the nose along with lifting subtle oak complexities and juicy plum, delicate dried herbs, cracked peppercorn and nuances of cassis that fill the glass. Full-bodied, the Syrah speaks more on the nose, as the Cabernet builds with depth and complexity across the mid-palate. The wine is balanced, complex and finessed on the long, focused and dark-fruited finish. 250 cases produced. It’s delightful.

Anyone looking for a master class in what a heavily toasted, charred oak barrel smells and tastes of could do no better than experience Gorman's 2015 The Evil Twin, a medium-bodied red blend that's entirely dominated by its time in new wood. It contains 75% Syrah and 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, but you'd never know.

A unique blend of 65% Syrah and 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2014 The Evil Twin comes all from Red Mountain and was fermented and aged in new barrels. Its saturated inky color is followed by petal-to-the-metal notes of blueberries, smoked earth, dark chocolate and licorice. It's full-bodied, supple and sweetly fruited on the palate, and while good today, I suspect it will be even better with a year or two of bottle age.

An interesting blend of 75% Syrah and 25% Cabernet Sauvignon that was barrel fermented and aged in new French oak, the 2013 The Evil Twin offers loads of Syrah pepper and meatiness to go with hints of graphite, dark fruits and licorice. Big, full-bodied, sexy and heady, with silky tannin, it’s a blockbuster to drink over the coming decade.
