From a hot vintage that produced fleshy and rich fruit, the Guicciardini Strozzi 2017 Vernaccia di San Gimignano Riserva shows a good combination of floral and fruity tones. The bouquet opens to honeysuckle and almond blossom with pear, Golden Delicious apple and crushed pine nut. Try it with some crackers and goat cheese. You don't taste the wine's age per se, but you do get a hint of that waxy fruit concentration that comes naturally to this vintage. Some 10,000 bottles were made.

The 2015 Vernaccia di San Gimignano Riserva is fermented in stainless steel and then ages briefly in oak. Some 10,000 bottles were produced. This is a fresh and lightweight expression with tonic citrus flavors that segue to Golden Delicious apple and poached pear.

From one of the area's most historic estates, the 2011 Vernaccia di San Gimignano Riserva is a balanced and elegant expression of Vernaccia that has stood up to the test of time. What I really liked about this wine are the delicate herbal notes that emerge from the bouquet. They have an all-Italian taste profile with oregano and rosemary twig in center stage. The wine offers good complexity but in a measured way with softer tones of peach and candied lemon at the back. The wine is 100% Vernaccia that has been aged in oak for up to eight months.
