The easy, screwcap 2013 Alto Adige Pinot Grigio Joseph opens to a luminous, bright straw appearance and very fragrant tones of bergamot, papaya, guava and honeydew melon. You really can’t beat this excellent value. If you enjoy a deeply aromatic and slightly sweet expression of Pinto Grigio (with fresh acidity at the back to clean the palate), this is your wine.

The 2010 Pinot Grigio Joseph is an attractive entry-level white. It shows good depth and plenty of varietal nuance all the way through to the creamy, generous finish. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2014. I was very impressed with the wines I tasted from Hofstatter and proprietor Martin Foradori this year. The 2009 Pinot Grigio is rich and textured, with good varietal character. Like so many 2009 whites from Alto Adige, there is an element of heaviness that robs the wine of the freshness and verve that informs the finest years. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2012. Proprietor Martin Foradori may be best known for his higher-end wines, but readers will find plenty to like in these more approachable entry-level offerings.
