The 2012 Saint Peray is an even split of Roussanne and Marsanne that spent 9 months in new French oak. Currently showing a healthy dose of sweet oak, it offers notions of buttered lemon, brioche, honey blossom and caramelized fruits to go with a medium-bodied, fresh and yet nicely textured profile on the palate. There’s lots to like here, yet the amount of oak gives me pause. Give it year in the cellar and enjoy it over the following couple of years.
Another rising superstar in Cornas, Johann Michel’s first vintage was in 1997. He produces two cuvees in top vintages, as well as a Saint Peray. No 2011s were presented. Importer: Kysela Pere et Fils, Warrenton, VA; tel. (540) 722-9228
