The 2009 Corte is composed of 80% Malbec, 12% Bonarda, and 8% Petit Verdot that saw 80% of the wine aged in American oak for 7 months. It offers up a pleasant nose of cedar, cinnamon, violets, and assorted black fruits. However, in the glass it reveals a short, compact finish that subtracts from the wine’s pleasure quotient. For an under-$15 red blend, Corte has it going on. It’s rich and full, almost syrupy on the nose, with lots of oak, ink and vanilla. Shows power and packs a punch, with dark berry, chocolate and spicy flavors. A little tannic and scratchy, but with structure and framework to spare.
