The 2009 Tizzonero (Montepulciano) is more convincing then the Sangiovese. The dark fruit of Montepulciano seems inherently better suited to Cotarella's approach in the vineyards and cellar. Licorice, smoke and underbrush are some of the nuances that emerge from this fat, explosive red. The richness of the fruit carries through beautifully to the deep, powerful finish. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2014.
La Carraia is an excellent source for well-priced wines. The estate is located in Umbria and is co-owned by oenologist Riccardo Cotarella.
