The 2008 Rosso di Montalcino is a fresh, bright red with pretty, floral aromatics that meld into a delicate expression of cherries, spices, herbs and tobacco. The 2007 Rosso di Montalcino reveals a ripe, expressive core of red fruits, flowers and earthiness. The tannins are firm, but the wine had just enough richness in the fruit to provide balance. This is a lovely, traditionally-made Rosso to enjoy over the next few years. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2012. Le Macioche is located in one of the higher-altitude parts of Montalcino. As a result, the property seems to do best in warmer years when the heat adds a measure of plumpness to these linear, classically-built wines.

Le Machioche’s 2005 Rosso di Montalcino is a lovely, delicate wine redolent of flowers, spices and red fruit. It is an excellent effort, although like so many wines of the vintage it could use a little more length. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2010. Le Macioche’s vineyards are among the highest in Montalcino.
