This vintage was not part of the official Le Piane Boca retrospective, but I had the chance to taste the wine during my visit to the estate. The 2015 Boca is a charming wine, with soothing and seductive fruit exuberance. Compared to the 2016 vintage (which I tasted from barrel), this 2015 edition is slightly more accessible and open. That's the characteristic of this vintage. It shows soft roundness and ripeness with extremely intact aromas of wild berry, licorice and candied raspberry.

Concerned about the cool conditions of the growing season (which saw a lot of rain throughout the spring and summer months), Christoph Künzli worried that he would be forced to skip over this vintage. Thankfully, the 2013 Boca was made, and it most certainly delivers the goods. The latter part of the growing season—and the most critical—saw sunshine and heat, leading to a late harvest with fruit ripening on the vines until October 23rd. This blend of Nebbiolo and Vespolina shows beautiful balance and delineation, with bright fruit and crisp freshness that will serve the wine well as it ages forward in time. This vintage also delivers a sound sense of inner power that pushes it elegantly over the palate.

This is lively, featuring black cherry, plum and earth flavors backed by a solid structure. Balanced, with a firm, dry finish and a lingering aftertaste of fruit, mineral and tobacco. The 2012 Boca is immediately open and accessible. The bouquet is perfumed and floral with rose potpourri, lavender and rose hip. There is a slightly dry and perhaps more evolved quality to the inner fruit on hand with sun-dried cassis or cranberry. Pretty background tones of smoke, ash and tar add to the overall complexity of the aromas. The 2012 vintage was mostly balanced with stronger heat during the month of August. Yields were lower than average due to weather damage at the start of the growing season. I am suggesting a 10-year drinking window.

This was a hot vintage with above-average temperatures that extended throughout the growing season, starting in the spring and lasting well until September. Indeed, the 2011 Boca saw fruit harvested much earlier than average, on October 2nd. Christoph Künzli admits that he has never been particularly partial to this edition of his top-shelf Nebbiolo and Vespolina blend. Candied fruit aromas of cherry cough drop and tarry plum open the bouquet, eventually ceding to dry spice, powdered mocha and dusty chocolate shavings. The primary fruit has faded, and there is a lingering spot of ripe sweetness on the finish.
