An unusually evolved moderate gold color is suspect in the 2001 Chardonnay Mt. Carmel Vineyard. In the mouth, it is very high in acidity revealing flavors of oranges, candle wax, and caramelized white currants. This atypical Chardonnay appears to be on a fast evolutionary track. Tel. The light gold-colored 2000 Chardonnay Mt. Carmel Vineyard exhibits smoky, hazelnut, tangerine, ripe pear, and honey-like aromas. It is medium to full-bodied, long, and capable of aging for 4-5 years. Tel. (805) 688-0305

Riper and richer than Longoria’s Clos Pepe bottling, but strikes most of the same notes. Lees coat the mouth with sour (in the good sense) flavors, riding over intensely spicy apples and lemons. The wine is dry and acidic, but paradoxically, rich and layered. Don’t drink it too cold. Try aging it. ——S.H.(12/15/2002)—— 92

The complex smoke, earth, spice and mineral aromas that open this wine are followed by subdued tangerine and citrus flavors, dried spice and mineral accents on an oaky frame. Like the other Mt. Carmel Vineyard offerings, this is a bit tight now but has a promising, good balance. Not a fruit-driven wine, this finishes long with spice and mineral elements.
