The 2009 Ops is also a blend of 40% Cabernet Sauvignon and 60% Merlot from 17-year-old vines, the latter planted at 500 meters and aged in new French oak for 12 months. The nose is a little subdued, though with aeration attractive chalky, granitic notes eventually emerge. The palate is medium-bodied with coarse tannins on the entry, the fruit darker than the Amalthea Red, with a chewy and, again, quite tertiary finish. Drink now-2014.
Although I was most taken by Loxarel’s cavas, they produce an interesting range of dry whites and reds, predominantly named after Greek gods and representing outstanding value.
