The Mamete Prevostini 2017 Valtellina Superiore Sassella Sommarovina opens to a medium garnet or dark ruby color with aromas of redcurrant, dried cranberry, smoke, licorice and crushed rock. You feel a vague hint of some vintage warmth in the slightly richer or creamier mouthfeel supplied here. Those pretty mineral notes of ash and campfire ember appear on the close. There is brightness, too, in the form of sour cherry or tart raspberry, all suggesting a platter of fatty Alpine charcuterie for this tasting. Some 13,600 bottles were made. Sommarovina measures 2.5 hectares with crushed rock and sandy loam at 400 meters in altitude. It is Mamete's first vineyard, acquired in 1996.
