The 2006 Syrah (100%) spent 12-14 months in a mix of new and used French oak. This full-bodied offering exhibits a splendid bouquet of pain grille, mineral, game, spice box, incense, lavender, and blueberry. Smooth-textured, suave, and well-proportioned, this lengthy effort will have a drinking window extending from 2014 to 2021, perhaps longer. There are more similarities than differences among the Grinon varietal roster, but a favorite has to be this dense and meaty Syrah. While not the most sauvage or iconoclastic Syrah on the market, it excels with a delicious plum and berry palate and searing intensity. The 2003 Syrah is reserved aromatically, while exhibiting lots of smoky black fruits. Currently the tannins are hard which shortens the finish. If this wine comes together over the next two to four years, my score will look conservative. Dominio de Valdepusa, located near Toledo, was the first winery to be awarded its own D. O. Under the Marques de Grinon label, the winery produces Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, and Syrah. The 2002s were pleasant but the 2003s are clearly superior.
