The 2009 Clos Severi is a blend of 65% Garnacha, 20% Carinena, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Syrah raised in 20% American and 80% French oak. It has a ripe black cherry and liquorice-tinged bouquet with fine delineation and touches of garrigue. The palate is medium-bodied, its succulent red berry fruit laced with orange rind and a cheeky touch of marmalade. The oak is well-integrated and the finish a little coarse but discernibly charming, with red peppercorns on the aftertaste. Again, I appraised this wine without knowing the outstanding price. I tasted the 2008 Clos Severi, a blend of Carinena, (35 %) Garnacha (30 %) Cabernet Sauvignon (20 %) and Syrah (15%) aged for one year in oak barrels, which feels quite classical in style, with a slight initial reduction giving way to notes of leather, smoked meat, black olives and some shoe polish. It certainly has a marked personality and feels different mixing the typical Priorat style with a bit of Northern Rhone character. The palate shows round tannins and a dense mouth feel, no doubt helped by its 15% alcohol. Even so, it drinks quite well but should benefit from some powerful food. This velvety red delivers ripe flavors of plum, blackberry and raisin, with chocolate and tobacco accents. The tannins are mouth-coating yet tender, and the acidity is soft but present. The 2003 Clos Severi is a blend of 35% Carinena, 30% Garnacha, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 15% Syrah aged for one year in a mix of French and American oak. The wine was bottled unfined and unfiltered. It is purple-colored with sweet aromas of cedar, crushed rock, cassis, and kirsch. Full-bodied, with an opulent texture and a layered mouth-feel, this richly fruity wine has nicely integrated tannin and excellent balance. Drink it over the next 8-10 years. From a challenging vintage, the 2002 Clos Severi was fashioned from the same blend as the 2001. It reveals slightly higher alcohol (14.25%) as well as sweet raspberry and cherry fruit with hints of blueberries, acacia flowers, and crushed rocks in the background.
