The 2020 Silver Hammer Shiraz leads with a porty, ripe nose of stewed plum, date and resin. There's not a lot of energy here; it may have been buoyant on release, but now it looks lifeless and dry. 14.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.

The 2019 Silver Hammer Shiraz is "our biggest blend of Shiraz," says owner Mark Maxwell. "It comes from a combination of our estate vineyards and grower vineyards, and the parcels can be anywhere from two tons to 20 tons." It is a spicy, pretty, pure wine and has a nice and orderly outlay of flavor in the middle weight palate. This is friendly, plush and fresh.

The 2015 Silver Hammer Shiraz is a savory, medium to full-bodied effort that successfully marries notes of resinous green herbs and black olives into a complex, interesting whole. There is enough black cherry and mulberry fruit to sustain the wine for another few years, along with some dusty tannins on the lingering finish. Pair it with rare beef or lamb and enjoy.
