The Moccagatta 2019 Barbaresco Cole is beautifully sharp and defined, boasting a luminous ruby color and medium weight. The wine is redolent of red cherry, sour plum, licorice root and powdery crushed stone. The tannins are firm but also silky, and I'm betting on an elegant future bottle evolution for this classic vintage.

Cherry and camphor flavors are the main themes in this Barbaresco, with flourishes of vanilla, savory spices and pipe tobacco. The texture is dense and finely woven, as this builds to a lingering conclusion with a spicy finish. The Moccagatta 2018 Barbaresco Cole opens to a medium garnet color and lots of bright primary fruit that pops from the bouquet. There are layers of raspberry, fresh cherry and Japanese plum, spice and powdered licorice. The tannins are slender and softened, giving this wine a silky personality. Production is 2,300 bottles.

Perfumed and expressive, this red reveals floral, cherry, vanilla and sandalwood aromas and flavors, with a hefty dose of raspy tannins courtesy of the new oak. Ripe and generous midpalate, it shows good balance overall, just needing time to absorb the oak.
