Under the guidance of winemaker, David Schlottman, Napa Ridge, part of the Beringer family of vineyards, is turning out amazing wines for low to modest prices. Current and up-coming releases are all exciting. Readers should recognize that some of the Reserve and single-vineyard wines are made in more limited quantities than the standard cuvees. The 1994 Chardonnay Reserve and 1994 Chardonnay Reserve Frisinger Vineyard will both be released in spring, 1996. Both are barrel-fermented, put through a 100% malolactic fermentation, and aged in a high percentage of new French oak barrels. Normally wines such as these cost $25-$50 a bottle, but at Napa Ridge they are practically giving away their works of art. The 1994 Chardonnay Reserve Frisinger Vineyard is even richer, offering amazing intensity for its reasonable price. The wine is long, unctuously-textured, and amazingly concentrated.
