I was geared up to love the 2009 Aglianico del Taburno Vigna Pezza La Corte, but ultimately the courtship fell short. This single-vineyard Aglianico (with 30-year-old vines in limestone soils) is penalized by excessive oak. The wine ages for nine months in barrique and 12 months in bottle. It shows a strong spice imprinting that will probably never fully integrate. I found it to be distracting. Otherwise, this full-bodied Aglianico shows tamer more contoured tannins than you might expect. This makes for a more approachable style.
