The 1991 Proprietary Red Wine Caldwell Vineyard is muscular, tannic, and concentrated, as well as backward and closed to the extent that it is nearly impenetrable. The color, mouthfeel, ripeness, and extraction are present, but the high level of astringent tannin may be cause for concern if it does not sufficiently melt away. A deep ruby/purple color and a bouquet that offers pure, moderately intense aromas of smoke, cassis, and spicy oak, are followed by a wine with deep, ripe, rich, curranty flavors, firm, elevated tannins, and high acidity. Noticeable tartness from the acidity kept the score low. This wine should age well for 12-15 years.
