Here's a delightful wine that is simple and transparent but which also shows a good deal of varietal character. The Paitin 2021 Langhe Nebbiolo Starda has a pretty bouquet with fine points of wild berry, licorice and chopped mint. That little menthol hint goes a long way to add lift and energy to the bouquet and the general flavor profile of this lean-bodied red. This is a delicious weeknight dinner bottle (with 16,000 of them released).

This estate's largest production at 20,000 bottles, the Paitin 2019 Langhe Nebbiolo Starda shows a ripe side of the grape, with emphasis on wild strawberry and dried raspberry. Those aromas fan out within a few minutes to reveal exotic spice, crushed white pepper and crushed flowers. To the palate, this informal Nebbiolo is streamlined and tight. That pretty brightness shown here would make a great companion to a classic chicken roast.
