Piedmont does not have an IGT appellation, but if it did this wine would be a perfect candidate. The 2016 Rosso is a blend of Nebbiolo (declassified from its DOC status), Dolcetto and Barbera. This is a great value buy to serve at informal occasions. The wine is fermented in stainless steel and each variety is vinified separately before the final assembly is made. The succulence and richness of the mouthfeel recalls the Dolcetto grape, but the bouquet shows some of the wild berry and licorice aromas that you would otherwise associate with Nebbiolo.

Scavino’s 2011 Rosso da Tavola, a kitchen sink blend of numerous red varieties, is an attractive entry-level offering. This supple, generous wine is sure to find many admirers among consumers looking for a friendly, every day Piedmont red. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2014. Enrico Scavino’s entry-level wines are very good, but not great. Scavino has chosen to make the wines at the lower end of his range in a much simpler style than his top wines, which sets him apart from most of his colleagues at the upper echelon of Barolo producers, many of whom make more important entry-level wines.
