A predominantly Syrah blend with some Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec and Petit Verdot, the deep garnet-purple colored 2010 Magnus opens with plenty of dark fruit on the nose accented by notes of warm plums and mulberries. The vibrant palate is replete with berry flavors, a medium-to-firm level of grainy tannins and a long, layered finish. Drink it now to 2019+.
Although like most of the Waiheke second-wave pioneers, Passage Rock’s David Evans started out on the Bordeaux-blend route, he soon saw the potential for producing great Syrah on Waiheke and has made it his emphasis ever since. Indeed, Syrah really suits his warmer, sheltered, flatter, southeastern site that is set well apart from the majority of vineyard plantings to the western side of the island. Generally medium-bodied, elegant and perfumed in style, Passage Rock’s Syrahs are worth seeking out for their perfumes and overall harmony without any harsh or under-ripe edges.
