The Cantina Pedres 2017 Cannonau di Sardegna Cerasio is a softly textured, mid-weight expression that shows a very versatile and adaptable personality. You could pair it with grilled lamb, or even a pasta topped with a strong Sardinian cheese. This wine sees six months in neutral oak that serves mostly to impose balance. That oak does not add much in terms of aroma or mouthfeel. This is your standard weeknight red wine. Some 27,000 bottles were released.

The oak-aged 2015 Cannonau di Sardegna Cerasio offers variety-driven tones of forest berry, tinned peach, grilled herb and white licorice that you typically get with Grenache (Cannonau is the Sardinian name for Grenache). This is a mid-weight effort with lots of smaller fruit detailing. Barbecue smoke, spice and cured leather appear at the back.

This wine is sold in a classic 750-mililiter bottle and a squat 500-mililiter bottle. I tasted the 2013 Cannonau di Sardegna Cerasio from the smaller bottle format and encountered a wine with many impressive qualities. On the nose, this lush and well concentrated red shows dark fruit aromas with pretty background notes of cinnamon and dark spice. This Cannonau is aged in oak barrel for six months. But the wine also shows a wild side with notes of bramble and Mediterranean shrubbery that root it to an authentic sense of territory. There is no mistaking this as a wine from Sardinia.
