I initially thought this was a single-vineyard expression from the Bussia cru in Monforte d'Alba, and it may well be. Upon closer inpection, I see that the name "Bussia" is part of the brand name and not in fact an appellation vineyard designation. The Pianpolvere Soprano Bussia 2009 Barolo Riserva is a hearty, smoky and full-bodied expression. The weight and the girth of the wine matches the very heavy bottle used to package it. Mature fruit and dried blackberry are followed by dusty tannins, rusty nail and exotic spice. The tannins are already broken down and dusty in character, so I would suggest a 10-year drinking window at most.

Packaged in an extremely thick and heavy bottle, the 2008 Barolo Riserva Bussia is a densely layered expression of Nebbiolo with broad aromas of black fruit, prune and exotic spice. The grapes are macerated on the skins for 21 days, and the wine is later aged in barrique for 36 months. The oak imprint is indeed strong, and you will recognize tones of clove, cinnamon and smoked cedar wood. You will taste oak-related sweetness as well and tight tannins at the back. The softer and more accessible side of the wine comes from its aged tertiary aromas of licorice and balsam herb. Bottle production is 10,000 units strong.

Offering pure black cherry and blackberry flavors, this red is complex, with tobacco, leather, tea and spice notes in the mix. The tannins still need time to resolve, but this has adequate fruit and a long aftertaste. This is an impressive effort from a beautiful vintage. The 2006 Barolo Riserva Bussia is a gorgeous, dark and brooding Barolo with balanced acidity and structure presented with a full rainbow of aromas. The aromas start out oaky, showing cedar, vanilla and clove elements, before turning to raspberry and flowers on the palate. Licorice, tar and tobacco flavors reign, allied to a firm texture of gripping tannins. The long, smoky finish heralds its potential.
