Aged in oak and cement, it reveals more nuance in terms of its richly concentrated fruit. You get grilled herb or dried oregano with floral notes of dark rose. The 2018 vintage stands out because a cooler start to the season renders a more original and delicate expression of this workhorse grape. This is a 15,000-bottle release.

The Podere Castorani 2013 Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Amorino is packed with dark fruits, leather, licorice and potting soil. (The vintage was handwritten on my sample, and I had a hard time making it out, but I'm pretty sure it said 2013.) This is a fun, mid-weight wine that would pair with a stewed-meat sugo on your favorite pasta. It shows smooth, polished dark fruit flavors on the close.
