Always a delight to drink, the 2010 Cabernet Franc Dedicato a Walter represents the top wine from Poggio al Tesoro. It is made in memory of Marilisa Allegrini’s late Walter bother who first fell in love with Bolgheri. As you would expect from this the variety, the wine opens with inky dark concentration and bold aromas of dark fruit, prune, blackberry and sweet cherry. It feels massive and rich, but despite its obvious power and heft, the wine carries its weight with grace. The 2010 vintage is particularly muscular, firm and toned. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2025. Now celebrating its eleventh anniversary, the 70-hectare Poggio al Tesoro belongs to the Allegrini family (historic producers of Amarone in northern Italy) and was founded in partnership with American importer Leonardo Lo Cascio. The 2009 Dedicato a Walter shows the potential of Cabernet Franc in Maremma. Bright flowers, roses, mocha, red fruit and exotic spices are all woven together in this beautifully layered, expressive wine. A warm, resonant finish with tons of Cabernet Franc character leaves a lasting impression. I very much like the richness and weight here. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024. The 2008 Dedicato a Walter shows good varietal character in its dark, sumptuous fruit, licorice, mocha, espresso and grilled herbs. Here, too, I don’t find the level of detail and nuance that elevate the best years. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2023. This is a mixed set of wines from Poggio al Tesoro.
