The 2005 Shiraz 1880 was sourced from the original Eden Valley vines planted in 1880. The wine was aged in two-thirds new French oak for 18 months. Opaque purple/black in color, this is a big, brooding effort with a superb aromatic array of pain grille, pencil lead, scorched earth, and blueberry compote. Opulent and velvety-textured, this rich, full-flavored Shiraz is surprisingly forward. It can be enjoyed now but will live off of its fruit until at least 2020. It is for hedonists only. The Poonawatta wines are made by Reid Bosward of Kaesler fame.Importer: Ben Hammerschlag, Epicurean Wines, Seattle, WA; tel. (206) 923-1376
