The 2007 Shiraz 1880 was sourced from the estate’s original vines planted in 1880 and aged for 18 months in 67% new French oak. Purple-colored, the wine is muted aromatically and slightly compact and tannic on the palate. Aside from that, it displays ample smoky, blueberry, and spicy fruit that could balance the plentiful, but ripe tannins with another 3-4 years of cellaring. The 2005 Shiraz 1880 was sourced from the original Eden Valley vines planted in 1880. The wine was aged in two-thirds new French oak for 18 months. Opaque purple/black in color, this is a big, brooding effort with a superb aromatic array of pain grille, pencil lead, scorched earth, and blueberry compote. Opulent and velvety-textured, this rich, full-flavored Shiraz is surprisingly forward. It can be enjoyed now but will live off of its fruit until at least 2020.
