2004 Wien.2, a 70:30 blend of Zweigelt and Pinot Noir from Stammersdorf, inside Vienna’s city limits, is – improbably – even better than the corresponding white, “Wien.1”, and meant to sell for but one Euro more. Accordingly, we should be able to look forward to another terrific value from Pfaffl when this surfaces stateside. A lovely, high-toned and intense cherry aroma is accented by singed meat notes. Juicy and refreshing with abundant cherry and raspberry fruit, this tank-raised red offers a long and lovely counterpoint by way of cherry pit and nut oil, roasted meats, and brown spices. Would that I could get something this good in my glass while enjoying a view over Vienna ? or for that matter most any other place. There is a wide range of barrique-matured reds at this winery, about many of which I remain unconvinced, and the best of which are quite pricey.Various importers including Avatar Wine Marketing, Long Island City, NY; tel.
