From the estate's oldest vines, on a north-facing slope, the 2017 Tinker's Field Mature Vine Pinot Noir is the most complete of Rippon's Pinot Noir offerings this year. It's a big, sturdy wine, boasting ample weight and tannin and a wonderfully rich, woolly texture to balance the bold black cherry fruit and hints of cedary oak. Give it a few years in the cellar.

Reticent on the nose, the 2015 Tinker's Field Mature Vine Pinot Noir is all about contained power at this stage. It's concentrated and intense, with ample weight and richness, ripe, finely textured tannins and terrific persistence. Give it enough time in the glass and vigorous swirling, and notes of berry and spice begin to emerge, and the tannins loosen their grip on the finish. In New Zealand Pinot Noir terms, this is as close to a vin de garde as you're likely to find.

Medium to deep ruby-purple colored, the 2014 Tinker's Field Pinot Noir has a wonderfully expressive nose of black cherries, black raspberries and aniseed with underlying notes of forest floor, red roses, fungi and mossy bark. Light to medium-bodied, the palate has a solid backbone of grainy tannins and lively acid supporting the intense, youthful and tightly wound flavors, finishing with great persistence. Give this beauty another couple of years in bottle.
