A blend of 76% Zinfandel, 12% Syrah, and 12% Petite Sirah, the 2006 Zappa reveals plenty of toasty oak, a slight hint of volatile acidity (which is an attractive rather than flawed component), and supple, medium to full-bodied, fleshy flavors. A blend of 76% Zinfandel and the rest equal parts Syrah and Petite Sirah, the 2005 Zinfandel Zappa reveals a dense ruby/purple color along with a sweet bouquet of black currants, licorice, incense, and blueberry jam. It is a medium to full-bodied, surprisingly powerful 2005 that should drink nicely for 3-4 years. Biale, one of the two or three finest Zinfandel producers in California, has done exceptionally well in the 2005 vintage, a mediocre to poor year for this varietal. That speaks loudly about Biale’s abilities as I tasted through nearly 300 Zinfandels, and very few could be recommended.
