The Salvatore Molettieri 2012 Taurasi Riserva Vigna Cinque Querce was born in a hot vintage with dry winds that blew north from Africa for much of the summer. The primary fruit has faded, leaving in its wake some spice, leather and tar. However, the wine preserves a point of sweetness on the close that is a relic of the ripe fruit that is specific to this growing season. Try it with some spicy lamb sausage.

Showing good balance, the 2010 Taurasi Riserva Vigna Cinque Querce is a powerful, full-bodied wine. The bouquet deals out intense aromas of dried fruit, cinnamon, clove and campfire ash. The wine closes with 15% alcohol, and you definitely feel that power. Like the other important red wines from Salvatore Molettieri, this wine ferments in stainless steel. Only this Riserva ages for a long 60 months in both barrique and large oak casks. Only 2,916 bottles were made.

The 2009 Taurasi Riserva Vigna Cinque Querce is in an evolved state. It is redolent of cherry liqueur, Indian spice, leather and smoked bacon. Candied fruit, tar and campfire ash underline the age and oxidized personality of the wine. This is a near-term option that is drinking nicely at the moment.

More than a wine, the 2007 Taurasi Riserva Vigna Cinque Querce is an experience. Dig your nose deep into the glass, and you feel as if you are absorbing the aromas from a fistful of moist volcanic earth. Dark fruit, cola, mineral tones, blackberry, spice, licorice, tar and candied chestnut all lift from the beautifully intricate bouquet. The complexity here is truly outstanding and the wine evolves slowly with each additional minute in the glass. It boasts a super smooth texture, with enormous richness and persistency. This is an outstanding achievement that should continue its slow evolution in the bottle.

Black cherries, licorice, incense, tobacco, spices burst from the glass in the 2006 Taurasi Riserva Vigna 5 Querce. Today, the 2006 is huge, imposing and virtually impenetrable, but with time in the glass the wine shows considerable depth and sheer richness. This is one of the more overt, textured Taurasis readers will come across. All the elements are in perfect balance and symmetry. Game, mocha, expresso, melted road tar and cloves are some of the many notes that are woven into the enveloping finish. This is one of the most polished wines I have tasted from Molettieri.
