Celebrating its 50th anniversary (1968–2018) with a seal on the front label, the San Felice 2018 Vigorello is 35% Pugnitello, 30% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Petit Verdot. When the wine was first produced in 1968, it started off as a Sangiovese-based blend. Cabernet Sauvignon was added in 1979, and Merlot came later. Recently, Pugnitello and Petit Verdot were introduced and the Sangiovese was taken out completely. This is a generous, full-bodied wine with 40,000 bottles released. The Pugnitello (a grape named after the Italian word for "fist" due to its tight concentration) underlines the wine's black color and earthy notes of black truffle. The other grapes add concentration, structure and black fruit flavors.

This is a historic Tuscan wine, with the first vintage produced in 1968. The San Felice 2016 Vigorello is a blend of the Tuscan indigenous grape Pugnitello, with Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. It offers depth, intensity and a profound level of dark fruit with blackberry, plum, spice, earth and campfire ash. Robust and softly textured, it has the length and power to pair with a juicy leg of lamb with white beans and rosemary potatoes. An ample 40,000 examples of this lovely vintage were made.

A blend of 35% Pugnitello, 30% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Petit Verdot, the 2015 Vigorello seems to have the concept of vigor and strength at its very core. The wine opens to an inky dark appearance, with thick layers of dark fruit, spice, cured leather, camphor and campfire ash. You feel the sweet ripeness of the warm vintage in the soft and succulent quality of the background structure. Some 38,000 bottles were made.

The 2013 Vigorello is made with Bordeaux grapes (Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot) blended with 35% of the recently rediscovered Pugnitello grape that was once more commonly planted across Central Italy. This is a dark and robust expression that boasts a very sharp and focused aromatic presentation. Like other wines from this classic vintage, this Tuscan red feels compacted and extra tight on the palate. It needs another few years before it fully opens and softens.

The 2011 Vigorello shows ripe fruit aromas with dried plum, cherry and blackberry preserves at the front. Rich notes of tobacco, leather and Indian spice add to the wine's background intensity. This is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. The mouthfeel is dense, syrupy and rich. The hot vintage leaves its mark, although there is enough freshness to keep it balanced and on track for medium-term cellar aging. Or you can happily drink it now, which might make more sense.
