Remarkably, the 1990 Pinot Noir-Sanford and Benedict Vineyard-Barrel Select is richer and more profound than the 1991 Pinot Noir-Santan Barbara. In fact, it is one of the greatest American Pinot Noirs I have ever tasted. The dense, deep color is followed by dazzling aromas of oriental spices, black-cherries, toast, and flowers. There is stunning concentration, full body, magnificent richness, and a chewy, succulent, heady finish. This is Pinot Noir at its most decadent and sumptuous! Drink it over the next 7-8 years. As the scores attest, Sanford is one of California's most fashionable wineries. Consumers are demanding more flavor and complexity, and Sanford's wines deliver the goods. While these wines may be criticized for lacking subtlety, they are exciting wines that can dazzle the palate. Although Sanford's Chardonnays can be stunning, their Pinot Noirs have become increasingly exquisite and are now among the four or five best made American Pinot Noirs. Tel. (805) 688-3300
