The Scarbolo 2013 Refosco is a dark and very rich red wine. The bouquet carries a lot of extra weight with ripe aromas of dried fruit with spice and moist chewing tobacco. There is a sticky, unctuous quality to this soft, loosely textured red wine. You get subtle hints of raisin and prune on the close. It would pair well with something doughy like empanadas. Some 7,500 bottles were made.

The estate’s 2006 Refosco is a big red that builds with layers of dark fruit, grilled herbs and tobacco. The rustic personality of this indigenous grape has been mostly tamed in this full-bodied red. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2016. I was quite taken with the higher-end wines I tasted from Scarbolo this year. It would be nice to see a little more attention paid to the entry-level bottlings.
