The third edition of a legendary wine, Thomas Haag's 2017 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese is coolish and flinty, almost like a Graacher. Bright (grape) fruit and lemon aromas lead to a generously lush, elegant and refined palate with an energetic, tightly structured, salty-piquant and racy finish with refreshing citrus flavors. It's still a bit sweet, but this wine will shine in 10 years and still in 20. Tasted in March 2019.

Thomas Haag's botrytis-free 2016 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese offers a deep, very ripe and finely smoky bouquet. Lush, round and intense, with generous sweetness and a touch of caramel, this is nevertheless a very fine and elegant Auslese with stewed apple flavors, intense and mouth-coating fruit as well as delicate salinity and mineral freshness in the crystalline and slightly piquant finish. Due to the richness and sweetness of the Wehlener Sonnenuhr, I'd prefer the highly delicate and filigreed Helden Auslese at the moment and probably during the next 10 years.

The 2015 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese displays a super clear, precise and aromatic bouquet of perfectly ripe and concentrated Riesling berries over freshly crushed stones. Sweet, piquant and concentrated on the palate, this is a pure, highly vital and racy Riesling. It's also a juicy and concentrated, very well structured and mineral Sonnenuhr Auslese with an endless flow of salts and minerals. Full-bodied, piquant and full of finesse and tension, this is a remarkable long-distance runner with huge aging potential.
