Readers looking for a Sangiovese on steroids should check out the 2007 Venom, a Sangiovese from the well-known vineyard Rattlesnake Hill in the Alexander Valley. Oak enters the equation in this dark ruby/purple-tinged wine. The barrique aging has given it a more modern international style, but I am not sure it has added to the character and overall appeal of the wine. There is more extract, but the extra wood, tannin, and structure take away from some of the simple charms found in the 2008 Sangiovese. Among the great Italian heritage families in Northern California (and there are many of those), Seghesio continues to set a high standard for quality and attractive value.Tel.
