The 2005 SOBERANA is a blend of Alicante Bouschet (33%), Trincadeira (31%), Aragonez (16%), Alfrocheiro (13%) and Tinta Caiada (7%), fermented in tank and then aged in new French oak for 18 months. This is an interesting wine, although not an easy one to approach. With bright, crisp fruit and some astringency on the finish, it has a bit of a sour cherry note on the finish and a little power. The oak is very controlled, and indeed, the primary nuances on the wine are the red fruit flavors and crispness. I rather liked how this developed and how it shows, but it will require some understanding for and appreciation of its style. Drink now-2015.
