The 1999 Merlot Winemaker's Reserve reveals saturated opaque purple color along with hints of chocolate, espresso, black cherry jam, and toasty oak. The wine is structured, austere, and moderately tannic, with more of a Bordeaux flavor profile than most California Merlots. It should drink well for 7-8 years. Tel. In 1997 there will be a Merlot Winemaker's Reserve, which may turn out to be outstanding. Approximately 200 cases were produced. The wine boasts an opaque purple color, and a knock-out nose of black and red fruits, plus spicy oak and coffee. A deep, exotic, expansively-flavored Merlot, it will provide hedonistic drinking for 7-8 years.Chateau Souverain launched a Merlot program in 1996.
