A young, tannic wine that needs some time in the bottle to come around. Beneath the firm tannins are fleshy, olivaceous notes of blackberries, black cherries, mocha and oak. Seems balanced enough for development over the next six years. ——S.H.(6/1/2011)—— 91

Perhaps the finest young Steltzner Cabernet Sauvignon I have tasted, the 1995 reveals a dark ruby/purple color, and a moderately intense nose of pure blackcurrants intermixed with blueberries and floral (violets) aromas. Rich, with medium to full body, as well as nicely integrated new oak, acidity, and tannin, this is an impressive, well-endowed Cabernet. I recognize that this winery prefers a light to medium-bodied, polished, subtle style of Cabernet Sauvignon, but I would like to see more intensity, ripeness, and most of all, character.
