I was shown a number of promising tank and barrel samples but only one finished wine, the 2007 Juan Suter Gran Reserva Malbec, a blend of 80% Malbec and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, made entirely from San Rafael fruit, with barrel-fermentation and aging in 100% new oak. It offers up an enticing bouquet of wood smoke, black cherry, blueberry, and a hint of balsamic in the background. Savory but slightly tart at the moment, it has enough structure to evolve for another 2-3 years. It will provide prime drinking from 2013 to 2022. Bodegas Suter is a new project in San Rafael started by the Lavaque family, whose roots are in Cafayate. No known American importer.
