Tenuta Tre Rose’s 2005 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano offers gorgeous balance in a soft, floral style. This medium-bodied, delicate Vino Nobile is best enjoyed over the next few years, as it is already somewhat ethereal. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2011. Angelini’s 2004 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Tre Rose is a gorgeous wine at this level and a terrific value. Fresh, perfumed aromatics meld into a well-delineated core of dark red fruit as this Vino Nobile reveals outstanding length and complexity. Medium in body, it should drink at its finest over the next few years. This is an engaging effort from Angelini. The Tre Rose is aged in a combination of cask and smaller used oak barrels. The 2003 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Tre Rose (90% Prugnolo Gentile, 5% Canaiolo, 5% Cabernet Franc) opens with gorgeous, deep aromatics, followed by candied cherries, flowers, spices mint, and herbs on a medium-bodied frame. Made in a somewhat linear style for the vintage, this pretty Vino Nobile should provide highly pleasurable drinking over the next seven or eight years. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2015. The 2001 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano is one of the best regular bottlings of the appellation, dark garnet with a plummy, spicy nose, supplementary notes of tar and caramel, and long and balanced flavors with plenty of focus and grip on the finish. Drink: 2005-2014. The Angelini family owns substantial properties in various parts of Tuscany, including Montalcino and Chianti Classico, but I have regularly found the Montepulciano wines to be their best, particularly in their more adroit use of oak. It’s the same story this year, and I was impressed by the level of both of the wines presented (a third Vino Nobile selection called La Villa seems to have fallen by the wayside). The 2000 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano La Villa, made from the vineyard surrounding the imposing villa on the estate’s grounds, offers a bright ruby color and a penetrating nose whose cherry and currant fruit is intermingled with vanilla and cloves. Vigorous and continuous on the palate with ripe fruit and good wood, the light tannins on the finish support and sustain the structure. Not quite ready, it is better drunk between 2004 to 2010. A large property in the eastern part of the Montepulciano, Tre Rose, which belongs to the Angelini family, is known for a lavishly-oaked, international style which sometimes lurches out of control.
