Sure, the full-weighted palate is looser knit than the top drawer, yet this offers a glimpse of the region without the artifice of excessive new oak or extract. Simple wine, ready to drink. The Tenuta Cavalier Pepe 2014 Taurasi Opera Mia is a dark and tarry red wine with robust fruit and lots of savory spice and tobacco on the close. This production of 20,000 bottles sees its fruit sourced from 40-year-old vines planted in calcareous clay mixed with volcanic soil. This is a robust, full-bodied red to pair with red meat dishes.

The 2013 Taurasi Opera Mia opens with notes of rosemary bramble, dark olive and caper at the back. There is some rose hip and pressed flowers too. This cool-vintage Aglianico shows some greener aromas, as if the wine is not fully ripe. Some 20,000 bottles were made.

The 2010 Taurasi Opera Mia is an extremely firm and poised red wine. The bouquet is strongly marked by aromas of heavy metals, rust and exotic spice. The core of the wine sees dark fruit, plum and dried prune. Spice, tobacco, barbecue smoke and grilled herb appear at the outer edges. The wine is well along in its evolution and is already mature. I'd recommend it for near or medium-term drinking.
