The entry-level Tenuta di Biserno 2020 Insoglio del Cinghiale is rounded and soft with ripe fruit and sweet cherry flavors. This blend of Syrah, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot has background notes of spice and baked biscuit. There is a milky tone as well that recalls the hot growing season.

From the Campo di Sasso vineyard in Bibbona (the village adjacent to Bolgheri along the Tuscan coast), the Tenuta di Biserno 2019 Insoglio del Cinghiale is an easy blend of Syrah, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot that undergoes winemaking mostly in stainless steel with some brief oak. It opens to a bright ruby color and offers dried raspberry, cherry and wild plum. This wine is all about primary fruit intensity, and if fruity freshness is what you're looking for, you get it here in spades. However with time, a hint of musky animal or leather does also appear, and a near-term drinking window is a safe bet. Pair this simple Tuscan red with a wood oven pizza margherita.

Winemaker Helena Lindberg tells me that this bottle was hand filled straight from the tank. The wine was bottled on the same day my samples were sent to avoid bottle shock. The 2018 Insoglio del Cinghiale is beautifully open and prominent with spicy notes of clove and spice that introduce lasting notes of black fruit, plum and smoke.

The 2009 Insoglio del Cinghiale is a gorgeous wine laced with expressive red fruit, silky tannins and exceptional overall balance. Hints of mocha, espresso, spices and licorice add mid-palate sweetness and considerable complexity. This is a terrific effort and one of the finest wines being made in Bolgheri in its price range. The 2009 Insoglio is 32% Syrah, 31% Cabernet Franc, 32% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot, vinified and aged predominantly in steel, with 20% French oak during the malos and 40% French oak for aging. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2019. Despite the ownership of Lodovico Antinori and the presence of an all-star team of winemakers that includes Michel Rolland, Tenuta di Biserno remains one of the best kept secrets in Bolgheri, at least in the US, where the wines have limited distribution.
